In a big push toward digitization- Aadhaar and Digilocker will be used as a one-stop solution to complete KYC (Know Your Customer) procedure. This attempt is believed to assist people in easily sharing and updating the important information maintained by several bodies like regulated entities, regulators, and government agencies. Digilocker will serve as the go-to platform for updating identity and addresses. Aadhaar will be the foundational identity.

What is Digilocker?

It is an initiative from the MeitY – Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, under India’s Digital Programme. It is basically a digital document wallet that is designed to support mark sheets, and government identity documents, among others. This is a widely used platform for documents and certificates digital verification. It has reduced the need to carry several physical documents. It has helped in launching a shift towards paperless governance.

This digital document is categorized into State Government, Central Government, Health, Transport, Banking & Insurance, Ministry of Defence, and many more.

PAN Number (Permanent Account Number) will be used as a basic identification for all the digital systems of certain government agencies, under the National Data Governance Policy.It will help in giving access to anonymized data.

Use of Digilocker

To use Digilocker, you must have a scanned copy of the document or certificate like a DL (Driving License), PAN card, or an Aadhaar Card. Then, you will have to upload it to the Digilocker app with the e-signature of the users. E-signature is just like self-attesting documents. E-sign is one of the simplest methods of digitally signing electronic documents.

To digitally sign documents through Digilocker, follow the below e-signing method. 

  1. Login to your Digilocker account

  2. Access the ‘Uploaded Documents’ icon

  3. You will see a list of uploaded documents

  4. Tap on the eSign link available at the front of the document required to sign digitally

  5. Now, you will receive an OTP on your specific mobile number

  6. Enter that OTP in the text box and click on the eSign button

  7. Selected documents shall be eSigned i.e. signed digitally

  8. You can eSign a specific document at one time. When you digitally signed the chosen document, it will convert into PDF if it is not in PDF format.

Well, the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) has launched Digilocker so that you can safely store valuable documents like identity proofs digitally. The aim of the Government was simple – to make India digitally empowered and create a paperless administration. Digilocker is powered by cloud computing. By making a Digilocker ID, you receive 1 GB exclusive storage on the cloud. A website and mobile app are available for Digilocker.

How does Digilocker work?

You can create an account on the official website and receive your Digilocker ID. You can generate the ID within a few minutes. Simply, fill in the demographic details, Aadhaar number, and mobile number in the sign up form. As a user, you can scan important documents like a PAN card and upload them in the Digilocker. This frees you from carrying paper-form of essential documents everywhere. You can send documents directly from the Digilocker to the requester. Moreover, you do not need to worry about the safety of necessary documents anymore.

There are more advantages of this incredible digital safe. You can forget the hassle of going from one office to another to receive a document. Imagine the relief to receive a document in real-time from a Government office with a click of a button. You may have got your mark sheets attested by Gazetted Officer as proof of authenticity. With the Digilocker account, you are also relieved from this difficulty. You have an eSign facility with your account, which is the same as self-attestation. Digital signature has other uses too. You can use it to eSign ITR returns.

When you visit the Digilocker website, you can view the list of organizations that use it. Some are the Central and State Government agencies, health and educational institutions, and Defence academies. These organizations directly issue documents in your Digilocker account. The Issuer is the term that defines these organizations. The issued documents are considered at par with the original documents under the Information Technology Act 2000. Recently, CBSE issued certificates to student’s Digilocker accounts.

Such an innovation definitely reduces the administrative work and cost of issuers. Companies can even request or verify digital documents directly from issuers. This verification occurs in real-time. A company that requests documents is called Requester. You must note that a requester cannot ask an issuer for a document without your consent.

Safety of Digilocker

You may be wondering whether Digilocker is safe to store your previous documents. Yes, it is!

The Government has taken many measures for the security of Digilocker:

  • Software developers use the Standard coding practices for Digilocker. In fact, they test every release for security concern before putting on the servers. Also, your data is constantly backed by while maintaining utmost security.

  • 256 Bit SSL Encryption protects every data exchange occurring via Digilocker.

  • You create a PIN during sign up. This provides an additional security layer. Moreover, Digilocker uses mobile authentication through OTP or biometric authentication via Aadhaar for access.

  • Data center that hosts Digilocker is ISO 27001 certified.

  • As mentioned above, no one can access your documents without your consent.

All the official documents such as our  ID proof, driving license, educational certificate, birth certificate are in paper form. Whenever you are asked for these proofs you have to carry the papers physically which may result in damaging these papers or you may end up losing some papers. DigiLocker is an answer to this and it facilitates saving your paper-based documents digitally.

Under Rule 9A of IT rules, DigiLocker allows users to store and access their documents digitally by saving their documents on cloud storage.It has been created by the Ministry of Electronics & IT.  The government has recognized the documents present in DigiLocker as the original documents.  DigiLocker also enables agencies to see e-documents in real-time and verify them. This allows a secure exchange of documents between the issuer and the verifier on the basis of authentication.

Get DigiLocker  in 5 steps

Step 1- Sign-up for DigiLocker either through the website  https://digilocker.gov.in/ Or on your phone through the DigiLocker App

Step-2- Register yourself by giving your full name, date of birth, Aadhar number and mobile number for authentication. You will be asked to set up a 6 digit PIN.

Step-3- An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.

Step-4- Create username and password.

Step-5 – Get confirmation of DigiLocker on your registered mobile number and email id.

How to upload Documents in Digilocker?

  1. Visit the DigiLocker homepage or the app and click on the Uploaded Documents option.

  2. Click on Upload.

  3. Select the file that you want to upload

  4. These files will be available in the Uploaded Documents.

3 Sections of  DigiLocker

Issued Documents: These are those documents that are issued by the government and DigiLocker registered agency. These documents are uploaded with the consent of the user.

Uploaded Documents: You could also upload our document in e-format and share it with the concerned authorities.

Shared Documents: Documents shared with authorities via email.

  • Aadhar

  • CBSE mark sheet
